Fluorosis – What is It And How to prevent It?

Fluorosis is a condition that is caused by excessive fluoride in water during the years when a tooth develops inside the jawbone. It refers to aesthetic and structural defects in the tooth. Fluorosis can take place due to a number of reasons such as; swallowing fluoride toothpaste, consuming too much fluoride or taking too many fluoride supplements, excessive amounts of fluoride in drinking water.
Therefore, majority of dentists in Pakistan recommend having an appointment with your dentist when the first tooth of your child erupts to assess his teething pattern and suggest you appropriate amount of fluoride for him. It is mandatory to know how much your child is ingesting fluoride until the age of 10.

Fluoride is Not Only in Water

Yes, you may be surprised to know that but it is true. Even formula fed infants receive 50 to 100 times more fluoride than exclusively breastfed infants do. You can ingest fluoride while breathing in certain contaminants in the air. It can even be transferred to fetus from mother through placenta. In short, fluoride can be inhaled, ingested and absorbed by the body that goes into the blood stream and then deposited into the bones.
Most of the dentists in Pakistan agree to the point that the fluoride balance in the body is very complex and is equally hard to quantify. Therefore, seeing the previous exposures, only an expert can determine the current ratio of fluoride ingestion to excretion.

Sources of Fluoride

Fluoride is not just in water but it is almost everywhere around us, such as:
  • Drinking Water
  • Infant Formula
  • Processed Meals
  • Toothpaste
  • Juices
  • Soda
  • Tea
  • Fish & other Seafood
  • Teflon Pans
  • Fluoridated Salt
  • Cigarettes
  • Pesticides
With so many fluoride sources around us, it becomes hard to keep track of exact source from where your child is getting fluoride and even the quantity.

Fluorosis in Children

With no such quantitative data available, experts and dentists in Pakistan find it complicated to determine as how much fluoride is taken in and where it is all coming from. However, we must know the fluoride concentration of our potable water and supervise the brushing habits of our children under six years.

Parents must fix an appointment with the dentist before selecting toothpaste for their children. And only a pea-sized amount should be used. These steps may prove to be helpful to reduce the ingestion of fluoride in our bodies.
